This That Whatever - Art

Has anyone been watching Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year?  I am and am loving it.

It is fascinating to see how the painters interpret each of the locations and find inspiration. Equally how the judges make their choice - artist Tai Shan Schierenberg, curator Kathleen Soriano and art dealer Kate Bryan. The series is presented by Joan Bakewell and Frank Skinner.

I could easily watch each season a few times over as there is so much detail and much to learn.

The premise of the show was that the National Trust UK wanted to find new talent to capture fresh interpretations of the stunning landscapes of Britain. They teamed with Sky Arts to search for a talented artist to create an artwork drawing for their collection.

The first series in 2015 was filmed at Trust sites, and the winner received a £10,000 commission to paint Flatford, a quiet hamlet and countryside that inspired the English Romantic painter John Constable.

Here is an example of John Constable, found at Art Gallery NSW.

"Landscape with a goatherd and goats (after Claude)" 1823.

The finalist in the second series painted their prize commission at Petworth House in West Sussex, where the surrounding landscape inspired many of J.W.M Turner's paintings.

Here is an example of Joseph Mallord William Turner, found at Art Gallery NSW.

I would love to be there at one of the events. It would be fun to paint as a wild card on the day!

I found Making a Mark while trying to finding more information on the show. The blogger goes into great detail about the show an the artists. So if you need to explore more, start there.

Does anyone like Dolly Parton?

I love to listen to her speak, not sure why, maybe it is her voice, accent and bubbly-ness?

An article by Gretchen Rubin mentions her intense interest in Dolly......

"What’s on your mind these days? I’m fascinated by the subject of creativity: both how to spark new ideas, and how actually to get work done.

Last week on "Ask Gretchen Rubin Live," my weekly Facebook Show, we talked about the habits that fuel creativity, and viewers had many great observations. For instance, many people commented that nature inspires their creativity, and many people commented clutter detracts from their creativity (certainly true for me).

And of course, different things work for different people. One person said she was inspired by her Instagram feed to be more creative, while another said she was more creative when she spent less time on social media. There’s no one right way, only what works for you.

It’s helpful to ask, “When have I been most creative in the past? What did my habits look like then – and how can I replicate them?” Maybe you work more creatively with a team – or by yourself. Maybe you need deadlines – or maybe you feel strangled by deadlines. Maybe you like working on several projects at once — or you prefer to focus on one project at a time.

I’ve read a lot of advice about how to spark creativity. Everyone’s creativity takes a different form, however, so the advice that works varies from person to person.

For example, I put a lot of pressure on myself to be efficient and productive. One of my struggles, therefore, is to allow myself to spend time on activities that don’t pay off in an obvious, direct way. Creativity often involves play, digression, exploration, experimentation, and failed attempts; it doesn’t always look productive.

For example, I recently allowed myself to indulge a somewhat random but intense interest in the life of Dolly Parton, which led to me to share this story on a recent episode of “A Little Happier.” It sparked an interesting discussion on social media about Dolly Parton and Oprah’s conversation.

But I am in the midst of watching Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year and it makes me want to pick up a paintbrush and do the same.

Have you seen this - Museums are now going interactive 'after dark'. You can tour the darkened gallery in the dead of night without leaving your house. The ‘After Dark’ live events allow virtual visitors to control one of four camera-clad robots or to join a tour already controlled by another user. Each robot will be fitted with a torch that illuminates artworks one at a time, lending a Scooby Doo air to your artistic discoveries. More details here

If you would prefer to sit back and take it all in without the crowds, you can now see Great Art On Screen. A new series of cinema events brings the world’s greatest art exhibitions to the screen. Great Art On Screen will feature the world’s foremost upcoming art exhibitions, creatively captured live especially for the big screen - Matisse, Rembrandt, Girl with a Pearl Earring, Vincent van Gogh and The Impressionists.

This That Whatever - Lifestyle/Art

I am going to be taking a bit of a break from the blog. The reason being, one, I have had a slight problem with my computer, and need to get that back up and running smoothly, as it has been quite a burdon of late. Secondly, I have joined a gym (the first time in my life), which I am committed to following thru with for the next 6 months.

I am sure I could continue on as is with everything, but I would like to take a break anyway, ideally to get some creative juices flowing and switch things up and around a bit, coming back with renewed enthusiasm.

In case you were wondering, I have been blogging every day for nearly 3 years without a break. Thankfully, I have my blog to remind me of those years, cause seriously it has gone so fast I can't quite believe it.

So on that note, here are two lovely pictures to gaze at and admire during this break. I will see you back here in July.

Obviously things change, because one time it is there and the other not. So I found Gallery Aloft and really like the exhibit it had showing. Alas the gallery is not longer there. But I did manage to find the artist that caught my eye. So am booking marking Suey McEnnally for "someday".

The dreaded pine rooms. What do you do with them to make them look modern and a little more fresh? I like this version - add cool artwork with bold colours.

I made a day trip to Canberra with a few of my friends to see the Toulouse-Lautrec exhibit. One of my friends had flown back from a holiday in Italy (38 hours including transfers - then added a 3hr car trip to Canberra and a 1hr plane trip to Melbourne - legendary!), and another friend had driven in from Cootamundra. Thank you so much girls for a great day!

I love the painters from the Post-Impressionist era as well as the Impressionists (blogged here). It was a Saturday and very busy, almost 4 people deep, which was a little disappointing, but it was amazing to see these paintings right in front of you and just how truly beautiful they are.

But now I am totally jealous looking at the new Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art mentioned here.

Forget the car trip....anyone for a plane trip to NY?
